Fighting the Good Fight

Before we had synthetic medicine, ingredients sourced solely from nature were commonly used to address a number of health issues. While many treatments of ancient times remain unfounded, many of their ingredients have been proven to possess great therapeutic potential.

Be real. Big Pharma makes billions selling pharmaceuticals. While advertised to treat a number of health issues, many fail to measure up to their promised efficacy and only seem to suppress the issue. People within and outside of the industry have conspired this to be the key to steady profits. Conspiracy or not, here's a fact: private insurers pour way more money into Big Pharma, with little care to invest in anything else. So, are we selling sickness? The bottom line is, natural alternatives threaten Big Pharma.

Medicine relies on the evidence that they're safe and effective with trials and research. But when it comes to natural medicines, they always seem to get the short end of the stick. Often lacking the scientific support of the medical sector to conduct solid research, many remain unproved for their potential benefits. Without getting too sciency, conventional medicines and natural medicines share a few common elements. But at the core of the latter, lies one of many beliefs: the body has the power to heal itself, while also utilizing different techniques that involve the mind, body, and spirit.

The World Health Organization claims around “40% of pharmaceuticals today draw from nature and traditional knowledge.” But, many of their standards and the overwhelming amount of drug injuries (even literal death) sing a different tune. In contrast, natural treatments are more bio-individual than anything, and throughout the healing process generally include a partnership between the practitioner and the person, the knowledge and expertise of facilitating the body’s innate healing response with appropriate use of said alternative methods, as well as taking all factors that influence health, wellness and disease, including spirit, mind and body into account  such philosophies are often rejected by conventional medicine.

Conventional medicine can be useful and, in many cases is highly effective. But the investment of science in natural medicine is still greatly disregarded and plagues the mind with many questions. Ultimately, it perpetuates a greedy and capitalist cycle that doesn't make the stuff of good medicine.

As we wait for more support and research to prove the usefulness and safety of natural medicine, we’re hopeful that things will become clearer soon. Ultimately, these kinds of treatments need more scientific support, point blank, period. To all the holistic healers, offering your time, expertise and genuine T.L.C., we appreciate the non-toxic, intensive approaches you take in your practices and herbal offerings. We understand your frustration, but know your patience for change and rigorous efforts to help others don't go unnoticed.
